Upgrading macOS
Over time you may notice that some newer versions of software such as Pages or Keynote will not install on your Mac because the operating system (OS) is too old.
As a general rule in 4J, we don't upgrade macOS automatically for you because of how disruptive it can be. Prior to installing any OS upgrade, you should verify the following:
• That you have enough time to wait for it to download and install (typically 1-2 hours)
• That you have a complete and current backup
• That your most important software will continue to function on the newer OS
• That you are able to be without your computer or software for some time in case something goes wrong
In particular, software to verify compatibility for are Microsoft Office and Smart Notebook. It's possible that for MS Office, you would need to buy a new version via the school. With Smart Notebook, it may need a new version to be compatible. When in doubt, you can put in a technology help request and your building Technology Support Specialist will be able to provide a recommendation.
Example: MS Office 2011 for Mac is not compatible with macOS 10.15 "Catalina" or higher because Catalina will only work with 64 bit applications.
How to Upgrade macOS
Once you have understood the possible impact and wish to proceed, you can access upgrades via Managed Software Center in the Applications folder. Alternatively, you may use the "App Store" method, but for the purpose of discussion we are using our district's platform for managing software on the Macs.

1. In Managed Sofware Center, search for "macOS". It will show upgrades available for your machine.
2. Pick an installation, such as macOS 11.6 "Big Sur".
3. Click Install.
Depending on the speed of your connection, it may take up to 30 minutes to download. Your machine will need to restart and it may take up to an additional hour to complete the installation.
